MGC vs. Somerset West
Lost 3-1 (Goal: Simon Martin)
LGC vs. Somerset West
Result: 0-2 loss
The Conberg LGC side played very well together in their first match and the new players faced the challenge beautifully. Conberg had good possession during the game and won 6 short corners to Somerset West’s 2. However, Somerset West put through 2 very quick goals in the first half that caught us by surprise. However, a strong start to the season with a team that worked as a team!
LTC vs. van der Stel
The LTC Conberg Tigers arrived in Stellenbosch on a cold but dry Sunday morning to play an unknown enemy. The team is made up of girls between the ages of 13 and 17 (and one 21-year old) and have all the enthusiasm in the world. The game started with great promise and the Tigers threw themselves into the fray like seasoned pros. They showed great passing skills and excellent positional play until an unfortunate error at the back saw a ball intercepted and a 2v1 resulting in a goal against the run of play. The heads dropped for a few minutes but then the Tigers picked themselves up and in the dying minutes of the first half, through a phenominal team effort, secured a short corner. It was textbook and the pacey push-out from Faine Loubser, dead-stop from Pip Forshaw and bang on target strike into the corner of the goals by Tori Warner, saw the Tigers go into the half time break on equal scores. The 2nd half was dominated by the strong runs from the links, Clemi Golding, GG Grobler and Paige Botten, who fed the strikers, Lizzy Waldron (our resident aged player), Tori, Faine, Holly Muir, Nicole Alexander and Sasha Sivertson, some excellent ball. The Tigers just couldn’t finish – something that we will work on for our next game. The defence of Pip, Sharna Alexander, Kirst Pienaar, Teen Seggie and Zoe our GK, held out against old-school moer ‘n soek tactics and at the end of the day, we secured a draw. Not bad for our first game, but lots of promise for the future.
Special mention must be made of Christine Seggie who was instrumental in some excellent turn-overs and set-up numerous attacking opportunities. Nice job, TLC Tigers.
M2 vs Central
First game of the season and all very eager to play. We had a good warm up and weather was perfect for hockey. When the match started we were a little unsettled due to nerves and playing a very experienced opposition.
Central took the lead early on in the game from a penalty corner. Fortunately we stuck to our structure and with a great first time slap from outside left post, Josh managed to put it in the back of the net, equalizing for us.
The game was fairly even till half time and the scores remained the same, 1 – 1. We started the second half fairly well but unfortunately lost our way in the middle and Central managed to put two more goals in bringing the score to 3 – 1. Following that we received a yellow card for a stick above the shoulder which severely crippled us and central managed to put another two goals in which brought them to 5 – 1. We started finding our rhythm towards the end again but unfortunately it was too little too late. The game ended with Central winning 5 – 1. Unfortunately it wasn’t the start to the season we wanted but we are optimistic and hungry to get a better result next week.
M3 vs. Someset West
Lost 1-0
L3 vs. Mutual CPUT
The L3 side that took the turf on Saturday was a mixture of some experienced players and some really young players, with the youngest in the team being only 13 years old. This combination of experience and youthfulness allowed the L3 team to be strategically set up so that the players complemented each other well. Tara van Alphen scored the first goal three minutes into the game, which gave Conberg the confidence they needed to get to half time. An unfortunate goal by the opposition ten minutes into the second half resulted in the team fighting back with everything that they had and managing to secure a short corner with five minutes left of the game. The short corner team executed a brilliant short corner, with Robyn Gersie taking the strike and scoring an awesome goal. The team successfully managed to hold off the opposition and put them under pressure for the rest of the game which resulted in a 2-1 victory for Conberg. Well done ladies!

L4 vs Northlink College
The Ladies L4 team played against Northlink’s 1st and only team on Saturday. Most of the girls having not played together before, put together some great passes and had many opportunities to score. They unfortunately went down 3-0 in the first half. In the second half, they came back fighting even harder and only conceded one unfortunate goal. A special mention must go to Anna Durr and Lauren du Toit who fought hard at the back and their commitment and skill level was outstanding. The score wasn’t a true reflection of the game, but still a great start to the season and lots of potential in the team.

L5 Conberg Classics vs. UCT
Won 3-0
Masters vs. WPCC G
Lost 2-0
What a privilege to play the opening game of the season on our new astro at Bergvliet – The Smurf Turf. We played a very strong WPCC side and despite the rustiness of a long lay off, we played really well. Chris was outstanding in goals, pulling off many great saves and is our man of the match. Their first goal was unfortunate but it was a well-played OG by one of our defenders (no names mentioned – hahaha) – while their second was a well worked field goal. We had 5 shorties which we failed to convert. It was great to be back on the park and we are all looking forward to a great season.
